The Connected Reality - A Matter of Survival and Success

Millions of internet-connected vehicles are travelling the globe today. In the commercial space, these vehicles are found in small, medium and global mega-fleets, including transport dependent businesses in virtually every sector of the economy, municipal, state and federal government, car rental and car leasing services, and independent trucking operations. These businesses and operators all require and rely on direct, real-time, wireless access to operational vehicle data in order to advance safety, drive productivity and operate responsibly.

Direct data access will be increasingly more important as electric and autonomous vehicles advance. Access to and interaction with data is the enabler of competition, innovation and value. Open, neutral and secure vehicle data collection and processing is what connects fleet and transport dependent operations to a host of specialized, competitive products and services. This sophisticated, global data platform will be necessary for a healthy business competition and innovation to flourish in the rapidly-changing, hyper-connected technology and market environment.

Open, Competitive, Secure

The security of cyber physical systems and networks is an essential underpinning of data openness and platform neutrality. Both imperatives reinforce each other. Openness facilitates security standard development, engagement of security experts and feedback from the broader security research community. The Neutral Vehicle Platform is planned around security by design, a broad base of recommendations, guidelines and standards with input from government agencies, independent experts and the security community. The key to security is design, process development, collaboration, and the Neutral Vehicle stands for all three.

The 5 Pillars of the Neutral Vehicle

Neutrality

The Neutral Vehicle is designed for access to data through competing data access providers and product/service providers. Its core values are competition, innovation and value in and for the transportation ecosystem based on user context, choice and preference.

Security

The Neutral Vehicle is actively engaged in the development, documentation and scrutiny of security recommendations and standards related to telematics and access to vehicle data. The Neutral Vehicle collaborates and consults with leading experts in the field as well as the broader security community.

Openness

The Neutral Vehicle is designed for openness and robustness to serve a diverse and constantly evolving ecosystem. The open SDK and rich set of API allows different vehicle data providers to quickly integrate their solution in the platform. Application and service providers can use standards such as REST and JSON for simple access to the vehicle data. Documentation and SDK are publicly available.

Scale & Sophistication

The Neutral Vehicle is designed to facilitate data enabled services for the full range of users from the small operator to the most sophisticated global corporation. It enables collection and real time processing of the richest and most high quality data sets available with access to advanced data analytics covering a broad range of research, "public good" and commercial purposes.

Privacy

The Neutral Vehicle operates on the principles of transparency, consent and security as expressed in the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Canadian Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) specialized privacy related statutes in the United States.

Neutral Data Exchange

A Neutral Server to Provide Data

Neutral data exchange is a key feature of the Neutral Vehicle platform. One architectural option to achieve this is the Neutral Server which facilitates interaction between vehicle data access components and applications and services providers. The Neutral Server includes a web server to serve the API requests, an application server to process the incoming data, and a database server to host the different data sets.

Mobility Apps & Services

Lifeblood Innovation, Data Privacy and Cost Efficiency

Rich Ecosystem

The Neutral Vehicle platform is designed to allow service providers to continuously innovate and develop applications for end users using a common set of APIs and common vehicle data sets.

Privacy

As the Neutral Vehicle evolves into the consumer space, the protection of personal user data, consent requirements and individual privacy management will become even more important. As a global platform, the Neutral Vehicle design considers the requirements of and compliance with privacy legislation in North America (US statutes and Canada PIPEDA) and Europe (GDPR).
